Description

Chlorinated Polyethylene (CPE) is a versatile polymer widely used as an impact modifier and secondary elastomer in various applications, particularly in the PVC industry. It is produced by chlorinating polyethylene (PE), which introduces chlorine atoms into the polymer chain, enhancing its properties.

Key Properties of CPE

  1. Impact Resistance: Improves the toughness and durability of materials, especially PVC.
  2. Flexibility: Enhances flexibility without compromising strength.
  3. Chemical Resistance: Resistant to oils, acids, alkalis, and other chemicals.
  4. Weather Resistance: Excellent resistance to UV radiation, ozone, and weathering.
  5. Flame Retardancy: Chlorine content provides inherent flame retardancy.
  6. Processability: Compatible with a wide range of polymers and easy to process.

Manufacturing Process

CPE is produced by chlorinating polyethylene in one of the following methods:

  1. Solution Chlorination: PE is dissolved in a solvent, and chlorine gas is introduced.
  2. Suspension Chlorination: PE is suspended in water, and chlorine gas is added.
  3. Fluidized Bed Chlorination: PE powder is fluidized, and chlorine gas is passed through it.

The degree of chlorination (typically 25-45%) determines the properties of the final product.

Key Applications of CPE for PVC Products

PVC Modification:

  • Impact Modifier: Used in rigid PVC products like window profiles, pipes, and siding to enhance impact strength.
  • Flexibilizer: Added to flexible PVC for cables, hoses, and flooring.

Rubber Industry:

  • Used as a cost-effective alternative to other elastomers in rubber products like seals, gaskets, and conveyor belts.

Wire and Cable:

  • Provides flame retardancy, flexibility, and weather resistance in cable sheathing and insulation.

Adhesives and Coatings:

  • Used in solvent-based adhesives and coatings for its chemical resistance and durability.

Automotive:

  • Used in weather stripping, seals, and under-the-hood components.

Benefits of Chlorinated Polyethylene Additives

  • Improved Impact Strength: Significantly enhances the toughness of rigid PVC.
  • Weatherability: Protects PVC from UV radiation and environmental degradation.
  • Processability: Reduces processing time and energy consumption.
  • Cost-Effective: Provides a balance of performance and cost.
  • Compatibility: Easily blends with PVC and other polymers
